KINSHASA, Congo – The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo says it plans to disarm anyone outside the national security forces who is caught with a firearm in the eastern city of Goma and its northern suburbs.
In a statement Tuesday, the mission said the new policy would go into effect on Thursday at 4 p.m. to establish a security zone in the region, which it said has seen "repeated attacks" by the M23 rebel group on army positions since mid-May.
After the deadline, anyone caught in violation of the policy "will be considered an imminent threat of physical violence" and will be forcibly disarmed if necessary.
The statement said more than 1 million people live in the area between Goma and the town of Sake, including 70,000 people displaced by fighting.
