{UAH} Police Officers to get food as pockets run dry - haaya

By ANDREW BAGALA

Maize flour and beans to be given to the police families today.

KAMPALA

Police management has ordered for immediate release of food to every police family after the Ministry of Public Service failed to pay the officers their June salaries.

The decision was reached in an emergency meeting by the Force's second highest body, headed by Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura, yesterday.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said each officer will be given beans and maize flour as a remedy as they wait for salary. "Police management discussed the challenges of salary delays to the officers. Although salary delays are beyond our jurisdictions, we decided to use our meagre resources to give food to the officers as we wait for the salaries," Ms Nabakooba said yesterday.

The decision follows stories this newspaper highlighted showing the plight of the police officers. Officers told the Daily Monitor that they are engaged in fishing, transporting passengers on boda boda motorcycles and tracking stolen mobile phones to earn a living.

Food distribution at every police station will start today (Thursday), police said. However, Ms Nabakooba said the top management has not decided on the quantity they are to give each officer. "We left that to the logistic managers to determine. But it may depend on the size of the family or standard quantity if food won't be enough for the entire force," she said.
