RIYADH – The Ministry of Labor has announced a temporary halt on recruitment from Ethiopia, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Labor in coordination with the Ministry of Interior has temporarily stopped recruitment from the African country so as to investigate recent events, conduct the necessary studies, and analyze available data, said SPA.

Calls for a ban on recruitment from Ethiopia was growing after an Ethiopian housemaid stabbed to death an 11-year-old Syrian girl in Riyadh earlier this month.

Last month a 26-year-old Ethiopian maid confessed to killing her sponsor's six-year-old daughter inside the family home by slitting her throat with a meat cleaver.

A Saudi official had urged the Kingdom to stop importing domestic workers from the African country following a series of crimes committed by housemaids.

"There is a need now to halt the recruitment of domestic servants from Ethiopia after an increase in their crimes against children in the Kingdom," said Saad Al Baddah, director of the National Workers Hiring Committee.

Each month, around 7,000-10,000 Ethiopian domestic helpers arrive in the Kingdom, according to unofficial figures. – SG
