Germany to add third gender option to birth certificates

Germany joins Australia as the only countries that allow parents to skip a definite gender on a birth certificate. Newborns can be labeled 'blank' instead of male or female, starting in November.

Germany will become the second country in the world to add a third gender option to birth certificates.

Germany is set to become the first European country to add a third gender option to birth certificates.

Parents can choose between male, female or “blank” starting in November, Spiegel Online reported.

The new law allows parents of newborns who have characteristics of both sexes to wait until the children are old enough to decide if they want to be labeled male or female. Or, people can opt to remain genderless.

Germany is right behind Australia, which became the first country in the world to legally introduce a third gender, about six weeks ago.

Starting in November in Germany, newborns don’t have to be labeled male or female.

Earlier this year, Nepal announced it would start issuing third gender citizen certificates.

While the Australian law applies to all official documents, Germany’s only applies to birth certificates. Officials haven’t said how the legislation will affect other documents, like passports, which still require a person to identify as male or female.

Silvan Agius, policy director of Europe’s International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, told Spiegel Online that Germany’s decision should push other nations, like neighboring Belgium, to also change gender laws.

“Things are moving slower than they should at the European level,” Agius said. “Though Brussels has ramped up efforts to promote awareness of trans and intersex discrimination, I would like to see things speed up.”
