The Government has disbursed sh2bn as part of the sh20b it owes the Kingdom of Buganda in rent arrears. This follows a recent agreement signed between Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and President Yoweri Museveni.

Buganda kingdom information minister, Denis Walusimbi said told a news conference at Bulange Mengo that the money was wired to the Kingdom treasury.

"The government has paid sh2bn part of the sh20bn it owes the kingdom in rent arrears. We have it in our treasury. We are so grateful that the government has kept its promise," he said.

Walusimbi said the Kabaka has also appointed two people on a committee to verify the property that is to be compensated as agreed upon by the Government.

The members include the kingdom minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs Apollo Nelson Makubuya and Prince David Wasajja, Kabaka's young brother. The duo will work with the two yet to be appointed by the President to verify the properties before compensation.

The Kabaka also appointed another four-member committee that includes; Makubuya, Prince Wasajja, Ambassadors William Naggaga and William Matovu to identify the properties are located and their values.

The Kabaka has also extended the mandate of Buganda Land Board (BLD) to manage all the other returned land from the Central Government. BLB has been managing 350 square miles for the Kabaka.

According to the agreement, the Government promised to return former estates for Buganda kingdom including land in urban and peri-urban centers, land where former administration headquarters (Gombolola and Masaza) were situated and markets among others.
