Kayihura warns of bloodbath in Kayunga District - National - monitor.co.ug

The Inspector of General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, has warned of a possible occurrence of bloodbath in Kayunga District over the rampant lad wrangles. Gen Kayihura was on Friday trying to mediate in a land feud between a landlord, Mr Paul Kiwanuka, and more than 50 residents, over 365 acres of land in Kokotero village in Bbaale Sub-county.

The police boss blamed area politicians for allegedly inciting tenants to fight landlords, saying they were (politicians) ignorantly promoting acts of violence.

Gen Kayihura has for the last two weeks camped in Kayunga on the directive of President Museveni to investigate land wrangles in the district . The President last month spent a whole day in the area, meeting residents and promised to find a lasting solution to land problems in two weeks. "Those politicians inciting people on land risk arrest and prosecution in courts of law. No one will fail police to maintain law and order in this area," a tough talking Gen Kayihura said.

Ms Idah Nantaba, the State minister for Lands and area Woman MP, has been at the forefront fighting for the rights of tenants and had returned many of them on the land which they claimed had been stolen by the current landlords.

Land tenants in the district have started 'war' on landlords whom they have vowed to kill if they dare chase them from their land. As a result, a landlord, Mr Arthur Kiiza, was recently injured by tenants who waylaid him near his land in Galilaaya.

Gen Kayihura said he had received information that many people had gone to Kayunga after receiving information that there was free land being given out by politicians and wondered how a leader can hoodwink people that they can get free land. "There is no free land in Kayunga and in Uganda. One has to buy it," he said.

The police chief, who had asked Mr Kiwanuka to give some land to claimants to cultivate annual crops, was heckled by tenants who vowed to continue fighting for their land, accusing the IGP of siding with the "rich".

Gen Kayihura also denied claims that he owns land in Kayunga, adding that he had no interests in the area. The Ssabanyala, Capt Baker Kimeze, urged tenants to remain calm as the government tries to find a solution.
