Brothers and sisters, there was some dramma last Wednesday when UMOJA (Uganda Moslem Journalist Asosciation) and Radio Pearl FM announced the end of Ramdhan and Eid El Fitry cerebration.
The Director of Shariah at UMSC dismissed them and said that the moon had not been sighted.
As l was writing my story where even UMOJA's SMS messages were quoting the director, Radio Bukedde confronted me with his sound bites, denying. But he later accepted that it had been sighted after he got confirmation from Saudi Arabia.
Later one of our colleagues here told us that it was Turkey that had sighted or reported it first and Saudi Arabia did not want to loose the lead.
That reminded me the year 1987 when the late Col. Muammar El Qadaffi chartered a plane for the late Sheikh Saaid Ibrahim luwemba faction for Hadj but the then Chief Qadhi, Sheikh Huseein Rajab Kakooza, with support from the then Information and Broadcasting Minister, Abu Mayanja sabotaged it saying that it was only UMSC with a monoply of registering Muslim pilgrims.
After 1991 liberalisation, now every body can go for Hadj or Umura without registering with any organisation.
Likewise, with Globalization, Sheikh Kakooza and Saudi Arabia will not have a monopoly for declaring the sight of the new moon or the full moon.
Lastly, Muslims should popularize the Islamic lunar calendar, Africa Muslim Community Juma Sect Bukoto Nateete have persisted on this.
