The National Assembly could change the law to make governors to be appointees rather than elected officials, in what some MPs argue would tame county executives' rising influence.
At a sitting by the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, MPs charged that some governors were consulting no one in their expenditure, were already extravagant and were reaching out to MPs' rivals, yet they wanted more for their counties.
DANGER TO MPS
The committee's chairman, Mr Sam Chepkonga (Ainamoi) said the current management style of governors could be a "danger to MPs" because the legislators are not being involved in budgetary issues affecting their constituencies.
"We shall be dethroned. We have seen governors walking in our constituencies with prospective MPs, yet no one is consulting us," he argued.
Governors have been demanding that the law be changed to increase budgetary allocations from the National Treasury to 40 per cent, up from the current 15 per cent.
They have been calling for a referendum to effect the changes.
