{UAH} Who was Captain Amon Byarugaba

He was among the renegade soldiers that were allegedly brought from Ituri forest DRC The
soldiers were then taken to Makindye while the civilians were detained in
Luzira. Byarugaba being the most senior in rank was made the cell
chairman of their Ituri group as was comonly refered to in Makindye
and consisted among others Lt Kyarisima, Lt Asiimwe, Sgt Agume. The
Makindye group became dormant while the Luzira group of 22 that
Included the likes of Sam Okiring (died in Canada) and William
Manenero, Kosmas Komaketch, Kifefe etc was more active in pushing for their
rights. It is this Luzira group that was a subject of the Black Mamba
raid on the High court. As a result, the 22 were brought to Makindye
and put under Byarugaba's chairmanship for taming. Within security
circles there was a belief that the group was getting collective
welfare aid from their God fathers and wanted it monitored.
Unfortunately, Byarugaba had a belief that Museveni
would get tired and set them free. He often argued that "even Mandela
spent 27 years". Through the mediation of Col Bugingo and Gen. Kaihura, the
first batch of some of the Ituri group members secured their release
under the Museveni amnesty. Byarugaba maintained his innocence and
refused such offers but hoped for Museveni's leniency.  It is very sad he has
died in detention but also a lesson about Museveni's resolve to
ruthlessly deal with imaginary opponents.
