{UAH} Anti-corruption bill is timely
The Anti-corruption (Amendment) Bill, which was tabled last week by Makindye East MP John Ssimbwa is very important, and should be quickly passed.
This bill proposes confiscation of properties owned or controlled by a person convicted of corruption or embezzlement or abuse of office, and any property owned by relatives, close associates – as long as court is satisfied that the said property was derived from the offence of corruption.
This is timely, given the many Ugandans who are charged with corruption only to be released after a short while without paying back. Other government officials are charged, only for them to bounce back after 'winning' the cases.
Only recently, Geofrey Kazinda, the former principal accountant in the Office of the Prime Minister, was charged with 29 accounts of corruption. The five-year jail term that was given to Kazinda attracted an outcry from a public that thought it was light compared to the offences he is said to have committed.
Therefore, I urge the legislators to hurry and pass the bill so that the government can always recover the stolen money and also to get rid of the merciless goons who want to fatten their stomachs as the ribs of the innocent citizens peep out of their skins.
