6,000 bars “flex” in Yaoundé

(Business in Cameroon) - There were nearly 6,000 bars in the city of Yaoundé, an ever-growing sector, the weekly Reperes said on Wednesday September 4, quoting figures it obtained from the trade union of dealers in this business.

-

Breweries in 2012 announced that more than 500 million liters were sold in Cameroon. Cameroonians in general and the population of Yaoundé in particular consume more alcohol, the weekly said.
This chaos dates back the 90s during the fight for civil liberties in Cameroon.

It arm twisted government to open up many sectors including that of drinks outlets. Especially with the November 9, 1990 law that laid down conditions for obtaining a permit to open a bar. Loose, this law okays an applicant for a permit to start off two weeks after, even if the civil administrator does not grant the permit.

Also, due to the economic crisis that began in the 80s, government in July 1995 allowed all income generation businesses in the county (legal or not), to enlarge the tax base and bail out State, an undisclosed source told the weekly.

Bars are found at any corner in Yaoundé, and are open at outlawed hours. Article 14 of the 1990 presidential decree prohibits a tavern from opening within 200 meters of a hospital, a school or a place of worship. And, accordingly defines the opening and closing hours of bars: takeaways (off-licenses) from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m, sale-on-site consumption (on- licenses from 6:00 to 0:00).
