Napak-First Lady Janet Museveni has given out her convoy ambulance to Matany Missionary Hospital in Napak District to transport expectant mothers from remote areas.

Sources close to State House said Ms Museveni, who is also the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, gave out the vehicle on Thursday and asked the hospital to use it until they get back theirs which was confiscated by court bailiffs.

The hospital ambulance which was impounded on August 1 after the hospital failed to pay Shs35million in damages to a student who had been wrongfully dismissed from Matany School of Nursing, a branch of the hospital.

Relief at hospital
The hospital administrator, Brother Guenther Naehrich, confirmed receiving the ambulance, describing it as a good gesture from the First Lady and a relief to the hospital.

"It has been very hard to pick patients from remote health centres to the main hospital but now with the ambulance, it will be easy," Brother Naehrich said.

He added that the First Lady also promised to help the hospital to recover the impounded ambulance. Following the confiscation of the ambulance, 20 mothers with delivery complications had reportedly died within 10 days since they could not be transported to Matany, the biggest hospital in the area.

The District Health Director, Dr James Lemukol, said since they received ambulance they have been able to pick up more than 13 mothers with delivery complications from the remote places.
The ambulance has been welcomed by hundreds of mothers and patients in the district.

"When I saw the ambulance coming to pick a patient in my village, I asked whether our confiscated ambulance had been returned back, only to learn it was from the First Lady. Many lives will be saved," said Ms Rose Nakut, a resident of Nakayot village in Iriiri Sub-county.

The First Lady is currently camped in Karamoja sub-region conducting public accountability meeting in the region.

poor district services
The annual health sector performance report for 2011/2012 shows Napak as the worst performing district in the country in terms of health care delivery. The report cites lack of resources, inadequate qualified staff and absenteeism of health workers among the reasons for the poor performance. Napak, Lamwo, Amudat and Kaabong districts were rated at 14 per cent in performance while Alebtong and Amolator scored 33 per cent.
