Kiai claims his life is in danger
Former Kenya Human Rights Commission chairman Maina Kiai has claimed that a militia calling itself the Nyaribo Support Group has surrounded his rural home in inNyeri county.
Kiai said the police informed him that the group plans to burn his family's home and mother's homestead over his connections with the International Criminal Court.
Kiai's home is reportedly being patrolled by armed police who are also using sniffer dogs.
While addressing a press conference at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi today, Kiai thanked the police for their protection but asked them to furnish him with more details of the reasons as to why they are patrolling his home.
"They have turned up to the homestead over the last few days, asking about me, and if my family has any fears of security. They told me this morning that it may not be "safe" to give me more information on my telephone line... Why? Am I under surveillance? or are they (Nyaribo Support Group)?" he said
Kiai denied that he his a witness in any of the Kenyan trials at the ICC, but said he would have loved to be a witness if he had the evidence.
Kiai further stated that he fears the safety of everyone "in this extremely intimidating environment that grips the country, fuelled by bloggers acting with impunity" He claimed witnesses are being threatened and exposed by a section of bloggers.
"For the record it is not treason and it is not criminal to provide evidence the ICC. Under our constitution. Under our Constitution, the ICC is part of our Judicial system. Lets call them for what they are, Witnesses, in this environment, are truly brave heroes for their nation and for justice."
He said members of the civil society in particular have been under attack since the March 4 general elections. He claimed that activists and their families have received threats from politicians and in the social media.
Kiai further claimed that some of the bloggers spreading hate messages are now staff at State House.
