The escape route tunnel used by terrorists after shopping centre massacre

This is the dark and dirty tunnel which terrorists are believed to have used to escape from the Westgate shopping mall.

The underground chamber starts in the car park of the shopping centre and goes directly into the heart of Nairobi.

The open section of the tunnel is guarded by thick shrubbery, which would have provided good cover for the militants.

After escaping from the mall, they could have easily headed down into the tunnel, which has water flowing through it, and into Nairobi.

Speaking from the tunnel, Sunday Mirror reporter Russell Myers said: "The tunnel starts at the Westgate centre where the siege took hold last Saturday, coming through the car park it comes 100 metres underground.

"It then comes out closely guarded by shrubbery and continues for two kilometres to the centre of Nairobi.

"The terrorists would have been able to come through here completely unseen making their escape through Nairobi museum. After that they could have changed clothes and got into cars to make their escape."

A sixth Briton was today confirmed dead following the atrocity.

And the Foreign Office said today it could not rule out the possibility of further British casualties.

Some 67 people were killed in the deadly attack on the upmarket shopping centre and dozens of people are still reported missing.

Earlier this week Prime Minister David Cameron suggested six Britons may have died in the catastrophe and the Foreign Office confirmed this figure today.

The person's identity has not been revealed.

A spokesman said: "FCO can confirm a sixth British national has been identified amongst those killed in the tragedy in Nairobi. We are providing consular assistance."
