Over 400 graves were exhumed from a public cemetery on Jinja Road in the city center by an investor who was attempting to set up a structure, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) city executive director Jennifer Musisi has revealed.

Inspecting the ongoing renovation works, Musisi said the exercise was part of projects to beautify all parts of the city. Works on the cemetery have cost KCCA close to sh290m.

According to Musisi, the historical cemetery will become tourism and a recreation center.

She refuted allegations that the 3-acre piece of land has been sold off by KCCA, but confirmed that part of the land was sold off by the then Kampala City Council to an investor.

" We want the public to know that they were attempts to sell off the cemetery but  KCCA has made efforts to reclaim 1 acre part of the cemetery ," Musisi accompanied by Central division councilors, KCCA engineers and MUGA services the contractors, told the press.

According to the contractors Muga Services, only 300 graves of former world war veterans, Asians and Europe plus important personalities in the country remain buried at the place.

The first Mayor of Kampala Norman Goldino is among the prominent Ugandans buried at the Jinja Road cemetery.
