Hospital beds without mattresses, dilapidated and abandoned structures and tales of inadequate medical supplies were not enough to describe the horrible situation that welcomed Ms Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament, at Namasagali Health Centre III.
Ms Kadaga was stunned as Mr Paul Tenywa, the centre's in-charge said the centre had resorted to improvising a maternity facility after the main ward was closed for being uninhabitable.
The centre operates in a single room serving as the only remaining ward used by women, men and child patients. The room has no partitions or curtains, yet only three out of about 35 beds have mattresses.
The Centre was established in the 1950's before it was turned into a health centre III, but has now succumbed to inefficiency leaving over 40,000 residents underserved," Mr Tenywa, a senior nursing officer, said.
Ms Kadaga urged government to ensure that healthcare system is top among priorities, in pursuit of improved standards of living for the general public. "Public services can fully be relevant if people meant to benefit from them are healthy and can easily access affordable medical services in a timely manner," she said recently.
During the visit, a team from StarTimes, Executive Officer Kevin Chen said they would partner with the Speakers' office to donate Shs15mn with an initial donation of blood pressure machines, a delivery coach and drugs.
