THIEVES who stole more than 20 goats from a Hawaii farm allegedly used duct tape to keep them quiet.

KHON-TV reported 23 purebred goats worth $US10,000 ($10,600) were nabbed from farmer Keal Pontin's farm late last week.

Some of the goats left behind had ropes around their necks and their mouths were duct taped shut.

"It had to be very traumatic for the animals. They knew that they’d scream, so they were taping their mouths shut and they weren’t small guys," Mr Pontin said.

"They were huffing them over fences and dragging them down hills."

Mr Pontin said the robbers left behind a trail of duct tape with goat fur stuck to it leading back to the highway.

Most of the 23 goats were pregnant and 10 were days away from giving birth.

Mr Pontin said he had heard his livestock was being sold cheaply. He said the thieves' thoroughness suggests they were professionals.

A legitimate rancher sells their livestock straight from their farms and the purebred goats typically go for $300 to $400 each.

Police are investigating, and Mr Pontin is offering a reward.
