Business Clinic: How do you respond to free opportunities? CAMKWOKI IS WILLING TO GRAB THE OPPORTUNITY!!!

In a world of limited resources, I would expect business owners to immediately respond to invitations offering them access to resources or opportunities that they did not have to pay for. I have however, been proved wrong on several occasions including those described below.
Last month I informed three organisations of an opportunity to host US graduate student interns for three months next year. All the organisation would have to do would be to ensure that the interns worked on projects that would benefit the organisation in a meaningful way. The sponsoring academic institutions would also appreciate it if the hosting organisation provided accommodation for the interns; but this was an optional requirement.
In return, the interns' graduate schools would meet all the interns' expenses. In a nutshell therefore, the host organisations would be getting free, highly motivated student labour for next to no cost other than the time of the employee/s offering supervision. An additional benefit for the host organisations would be mutually beneficial relationships with the participating US academic institutions.
A month after receiving this information, none of the organisations I contacted have been in touch with the US academic institutions – an opportunity lost.
I really should not be surprised. After all, how many opportunities do I regularly see our business community ignoring? They regularly ignore invitations to submit nominations for domestic, regional or international awards, applications for full sponsorship to attend international trade fairs or even invitations to attend information sessions or workshops.
These offers are all excellent opportunities to obtain something for your business that you might otherwise not have been able to.
Motivated intern with all expenses paid
Offers free labour, a new perspective and potential links with the intern's sponsoring academic institution.
An award
Would increase your domestic, regional and/or international visibility and could lead to new business connections and opportunities.
Fully sponsored trip to a trade fair
Would expose you to what people in your industry in other parts of the world are doing. It would also allow you to interact face-to-face with potential customers from other parts of the world. Both types of interactions could be a source of new business ideas and future sales.
Information sessions or workshops
Provide current information, relevant knowledge and skills to help you run your business successfully.
After several years of working with business owners, I am still baffled by the number that does not take full advantage of these opportunities when they arise. My guess is that some simply do not want to be bothered by participating in what they think might be a tedious application process.
Others might believe that their businesses simply are not good enough, or big enough.
Whatever your reason for not participating, I challenge you to pursue the next relevant free opportunity that comes your way.
You will never know how well or poorly you will do unless you try. Let someone else disqualify you as opposed to you disqualifying yourself by not even participating in the application process.
