{UAH} Health workers should be professional

Health workers should be professional

Recently, the commissioner for Clinical Services in the ministry of Health, Jacinto Amandua, was reported in the media as having said that the Health ministry would start immunisation against Hepatitis B in West Nile. This is a move long overdue. Our humble prayer is that the exercise should be executed immediately. It is sad to see lives lost to a disease that is immunisable and treatable.

Last week two boda boda riders and a woman in Arua municipality died of the disease, while others are critically ill. According to scientists, Hepatitis B is worse than HIV/Aids, but it is unfortunate to see the government feigning ignorance about it.

A few months ago at Oli Health Centre IV in Arua municipality, I was amazed when a health worker literally told a man who had tested positive for the disease that there was no treatment for it. As the victim helplessly left the premises, I advised him to go to Arua regional referral hospital and seek further treatment.

Fortunately, despite the hospital sometimes running out of the required medicine, the victim has started receiving treatment. The government should employ highly-trained health workers. Professionally, it is not advisable for a health worker to tell a patient that their problems cannot be dealt with.

Muzamil Alamiga,
Arua municipality.
