{UAH} Torontonians - smoking ban in outdoor spaces - BAN APPROVED by Toronto’s Board of Health
A new report by Toronto's medical officer of health is recommending that smoking be banned in a variety of new places.
Dr. David McKeown wants the city and the Ontario government to extend smoking bans to: public squares, restaurants and patios, hospital grounds, swimming beaches, outdoor sports fields, and entrances and exits to public buildings.
Manitoba provincial government became the first provincial government in Canada to ban smoking on all its public beaches and playgrounds in March 2013.
Have Your Say.
Rob Ford the Toronto Mayor whose part-time driver was last week arrested on drugs charges here
said on Monday that he "hates the smell" of cigarette smoke but will not support a ban on smoking in outdoor spaces:
"I don't like it but I don't like the government getting involved," he said. "How far are they going to push this? Are they going to make the city like eventually one day smoke free? You can't even smoke anywhere? That's where it's going."
"No I'm not going to have a nanny state that the government's going to come in and tell you, you can do this or do that, so no, you know, we have enough restrictions on smoking as is," he added.
Says Dave:
Smokers will not be left alone, because smoking is a health issue. If smokers want to ruin their lives so be it but we dont all want to look grey, wrinkled and smell to high heaven. I truly hope this plan goes even further. Smoke at your own home.
Says Phil:
I had smoked for many years and tried to quit many times but I'm glad I made the effort. I discovered how ridiculous and self centred it really is. The point really is that smokers invade another persons' personal spaces with noxious fumes that have been expelled from their bodies.
Now if I was to sit at an outdoor cafe and flatulate for the same amount of time it takes to smoke a cigarette most people would find it vulgar but their lungs would be unaffected. It is common courtesy to perform your bodily functions in private by-yourself.
Why can't smokers do the same?
