{UAH} Uhuru's top adviser, Ngeno doesn't get it
Folks;
I have previously faulted top advisers to President Uhuru Kenyatta for misleading him on matters pertaining to his case at The Hague.
Among these confidants are legal counsels, including the Attorney-General. I now add the president's speech writer, Eric Ngeno.
In the Opinion piece below, Mr. Ngeno labors mightily to cast Mr. Kofi Annan as the cause of President Kenyatta's "personal challenges" at The Hague. Mr. Ngeno portrays Mr. Annan as the driving force behind Mr. Kenyatta's woes.
Yet, in a major speech the other day at the AU - a speech which I had previously called a masterpiece by his writers, probably including Mr. Ngeno - President Kenyatta himself gave us a fairly vivid account of how Mr. Annan came into the picture, and why the Kenyan cases ended up at the Hague. I've curled that pertinent quote here below.
So, the question is: why doesn't Mr. Ngeno still get it?
I hope President Kenyatta does not continue to listen to advisers like Mr. Ngeno to fight off the ICC, let alone shape his presidency.
Mr. Ngeno, please refer to this quote, from President Uhuru Kenyatta's speech at the AU the other day,
"My part is to thank you on behalf of the people of Kenya for your help. After the successful mediation of the post-election controversy in 2008, there was disagreement over the best way to bring the perpetrators of post-election violence to account and secure justice for the victims. One proposal was to set up a local tribunal to try the cases, while another was to refer the matter to the ICC. The Mediator who had been appointed by your Excellencies referred the matter to the ICC when the disagreement persisted. On the basis of this referral, the Prosecutor stated that he had launched investigations which, he claimed, established that 6 persons had committed crimes against humanity. According to the Prosecutor, your Excellencies, I fall among those men..."
