{UAH} ICC Trials
I was very happy to learn that African leaders unanimously decided that serving presidents or their deputies should not appear before the criminal court at The Hague. Some among us do not share this sentiment because they think the decision was was motivated by self interest by our leaders some of whom have committed heinous crimes against their own people that could land them at The Hague.
That may be true but it is not only African leaders who commit serious crimes against their own people. Crimes have been and are being committed in Burma against Moslems, in Iraq, Libya And Syria among others and there is no indication that the criminals there are about to appear before the court to defend themselves.
If ICC was impartial, as it should be, Assad would be under the bars or hiding somewhere in the Syrian hills and not conducting press conferences.
No one should tolerate impunity from any quarter, be it against black people or white people, whether the criminal is white or black. But what is happening with the ICC is patently sectarian, black Africans being demonised before the the glare of an already biased white dominated world.
The Kenyans elected Kenyatta and Ruto even when it was well known the duo were ICC suspects. Not only that; they were also aware that their respective ethnic communities had fought each other during the conflict of 2008 disputed elections. That former sworn enemies would come together five years later and actually form a government is indeed a clear indication the Kalenjins and the Kikuyus wanted to bury the past for the sake of peace.
However the international court's insistence that they appear at The Hague only helps to stoke the embers rather than put them off.
