{UAH} Chauvanistic Kenyan MPs stip women of family property rights

Folks:

This Bill, as passed by male-dominated Parliament, is an affront to the wider gains that women have made within East Africa in the last two decades.

Starting around 1990, women in our region have gained long-delayed rights to leadership, education and property ownership. Some got it through Affirmative Actions (Uganda and Rwanda), while the rest through the easing of previous roadbloacks, as in Kenya and Tanzania.

In Kenya, there is a provision in the current constituion that speficially protects a woman's right to property even in the event of a dissolution of her marriage. That clause does not set any minimum period of time for the marriage for the woman to claim her rights.

Now, read this developing story out of Kenya's parliament, and see how a bunch of chauvanistic male legislators are brazenly trampling over women's right to family property, and what a disastrous message this Bill sends to regional legislative assemblies in general.

I hope that President Uhuru will reject it, as he recently rejected another draconian Bill that was aimed at gagging the press.
