Tribute to Col. Albert Kareba R.I.P

When a young, newly commissioned Lieutenant first arrived in Gulu in the early 80s, after the fall of the Idi Amin regime, he suddenly struck a chord with everyone in the town simply because he was, and is, probably the smartest officer to ever wear a Ugandan army uniform.

The brilliance did not just end there; this officer also endeared himself to the people of that town. It is easy to forget the circumstances under which he served in Gulu. That was a time when most soldiers of Western Uganda or Rwandese origin were viewed with cautious suspicion in the UNLA because of the NRA insurgency in Luweero but this did not deter 2nd Lieutenant Albert Kareba. He charmed his way into the hearts and minds of the people of Acoli with his smile and his warmth.

At that time in the early 80s, it was possible for Albert to feel disoriented and homesick but Mr. and Mrs. Abe took him under their wings as one of their own. My father - Julio Peter Abe - always adored athleticism in people because being an educationist and an all round sportsman and coach, he associated an athletic body with an intelligent mind and he immediately saw this in Albert.

When I met up with Albert in 2007, he reminded me of how much he missed his Acoli mother and father. When he fell ill and was in India circa 2011-12, I visited India and although we never actually met up as I was in Southern India, we spoke several times on the phone and when he moved to the US, we were in touch through my brothers and sisters there.

There are probably only two, not too dissimilar, albeit, ambiguous words, that can be used to describe Albert: upstanding and upright. Upstanding - both physically and socially and upright both in posture and character. Albert was a dashing officer who served his commander-in-chief unwaveringly.

Albert. To the Abe family, you were never a soldier, just a son to Mr and Mrs. Abe or a brother to us 17 siblings and uncle to all the little ones so you can imagine how much void will be left in your wake.

He was an officer and a gentleman.

Col. Albert  Kareba. May God Rest Your Soul in Eternal Peace.
