Italian Arrested For Smuggling Human Skulls
A fifty-six year old Italian man was stopped in Burundi at the International Airport of Bujumbura. It was found that he was smuggling skulls into Thailand. Two human skulls were discovered in his luggage before he boarded his flight. The man, identified as Giuseppe Favaro, was a dealer of Venetian antiquities before moving to Burundi in 1999.
After being arrested his home was searched and other suspicious objects were found, but more information is not yet being disclosed. The origin of the human skulls remains unknown. They may possibly the skulls of murdered albinos. The trade of albino body parts is lucrative in the region because they are believed to have medicinal properties. The matter is being investigated thoroughly by the Italian Embassies of Uganda and Burundi.
When asked about the package containing the skulls Favaro used the fake name Kassim Abdoulgani, which is a name he has used in some previous transactions at the local post office. Favaro was not an unfamiliar face at the Burundian Post Office at all. He often came in to ship works of art since moving to the city. As a result the skulls were overlooked at the post office, but did not make it through airport security.
