Kenya: University Students in Court for Exam Cheating

BY BENSON NYAGESIBA, 13 NOVEMBER 2013
NINE Kisii University students have been charged with leaking KCSE examination papers. They are all accused of committing the offences last month after the exams started.

On Monday, Rajab Kosgey denied being in possession of English Paper three on October 28. Magistrate Ruth Maloba released on a bond of Sh 50, 000 with surety of similar amount. The case will be mentioned on November 21 and hearing on February 20, 2014.

In another court, Esau Lesopian Olesukamoi and Stephen Onyango Obando denied a similar charge and were released on a bond of Sh100, 000.

Others charged with the same offense are Nicholas Mboto Obongo, Vincent Magembe, Moses Muia, and Noah Okoth Julius Mwangi and Habakuk Okot. They were released on a Sh50, 000 bond and surety of similar amount.

On Monday, Kenya National Examination Council CEO Paul Wasanga said 20 university students have been arrested for allegedly being part of a cartel that facilitates examination cheating.

He said some teachers who have been arrested for leaking this year's examination questions use university students.

He said that 12 of those arrested students were from Kisii University while the rest are from UoN, Egerton, Kibabii Mt Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Kenyatta, Eldoret and Kbianga universities. Ends
