Following the acquisition of Victoria University whose former owners had failed to run it over cash problems, money bags Sudhir Ruparelia has given the hitherto lifeless institute a new lease of life.
When we visited the varsity's sprawling six floor storied Victoria Towers that is located in the heart of the city, management had installed state of art infrastructure.
Among the infrastructure in place included a high tech computer lab, furniture, science learning material, a fully stocked library, a fully stocked nursing lab, large projectors and screens, high tech public speaking system and air conditioners.
Lecturers stood on a raised podium with lights fixed above it so that learners can easily follow whatever was being cast on the projector screen.
Overjoyed
The continuing students, who got stranded after the former owners closed shop, said with grins on their faces that the Ruparelia Group had helped remove a dark cloud over their future.
"When the varsity closed, we suffered heartbreaks. We thought of the amount of money we had to pay to seek education elsewhere. We also thought of beginning afresh and in a different environment. There was also the possibility of losing contemporaries we had joined with," a student we interviewed said.
That would change, the students told us, when the current owners took over the institution and undertook the continuing ones on the same terms as they had discussed with the former owners.
"This was relief for our guardians and parents who had to fork out big money for all of us to start afresh as well as pace up and down looking for universities to take us on," the students remarked.
Some of the continuing students were writing their end of semester exams in a conducive environment and had at their disposal all the materials they wanted.
VC speaks out
Boasting of a PHD holder Vice Chancellor Dr Stephen Robert Isabalija, the varsity had more than enough well grounded lecturers at the disposal of the learners.
"They are not only many and highly learned, but our lecturers have had a chance to teach at several leading universities around the world thereby gaining loads of expertise and experience to do a good job," the VC boasted.
Good response
Dr Isabalijja expressed happiness and gratitude for the good response the students, their parents and guardians had extended them.
"We have registered a good number of new students since the new owners took up the university and more are calling to express interest," Isabalijja told us.
Intakes
He said registration for the January 2014 is on while the next intake will take place in September the same year. Courses offered include Business Administration and Management, Computer Science, Bachelor of Public Health, Bachelor of Nursing Science, Humanities and so on.
Fired up
Riding on their employers' sound financial position, Isabalija said the academic staff will have no reason not to do a good job geared at turning the center of learning the best in the country as well as in the Great Lakes Region.
"Our bosses have made life easy for us lecturers by putting in place the best of infrastructure, the onus is now on us to prove our worth by doing a job that is demanded by our very ambitious employers," Isabalija noted.
The soft spoken VC told Investigator Business that he had already briefed the academic staff and their non- academic counterparts about the excellent job our bosses expect us to deliver without excuses.
"Our bosses' uncompromising stance when it comes to quality education is proof that they are not putting money first, but out to churn out top quality employees. It's the reason why parents, guardians and all Ugandans should embrace this university," Isabalija opined.
Location
Because it's located in the city center, Isabalija said it's easy for the learner to save on transport to and from home.
Dr Isabalijja also revealed the instituton boasts of 17 lecturer rooms with a 4000 student holding capacity in one go.
The Varsity has an underground car park that can accommodate up to 80 cars. This means the students do not have to pay parking fees let alone fear for the safety of their cars.
