Mandela’s memorial billboard desecrated

CAPE TOWN. – A billboard honouring former South African President Nelson Mandela near Cape Town has been defaced and damaged, drawing concern and condemnation, authorities said yesterday. The billboard is located at the Dullah Omar Centre in Hazel Road, Rylands near Cape Town.

Early yesterday morning, the leadership and membership of the African National Congress Robert Waterwitch Thornhill branch, were horrified upon discovering a desecrated Madiba memorial billboard, said branch chairperson Majid Mowzer.

In a repulsive act of disrespect to the legacy of Madiba, the billboard was found defaced and damaged.

Vigilant residents have also expressed concern and disappointment, Mowzer said in a statement distributed by the South African Press Association.

“We are deeply disappointed and concerned at such acts of political intolerance. It demonstrates scant regard to Madiba, the Mandela family and the global sentiment towards Madiba,” said Mowzer.

This malicious act is a direct attack on the personality, ideals and legacy of the global icon, Nelson Mandela, Mowzer said.

“The ANC Robert Waterwitch Thornhill Branch strongly condemns this act of violence and political intolerance against our leader and father of our nation, Nelson Mandela and the damage to property at the Dullah Omar Centre,” said the statement.

The Dullah Omar Centre not only houses the ANC Robert Waterwitch Thornhill but also is a facility widely utilised by a number of other community based and resident’s organisations.

“This act of violence is therefore extremely disappointing to the broader community as we celebrate twenty years of democracy and prepare for a peaceful 2014 general election” added Mowzer.

The ANC Robert Waterwitch Thornhill Branch has laid a charge with the South African Police (SAPS).

“We call on the SAPS to bring the perpetrators to book and thank those residents who have expressed their concern and reported the matter,” said Mowzer. – Xinhua.
