WSP Continues to Seek Witnesses to Deadly Hit and Run Collision
- Victim was an immigrant from Ethiopia -

King County -- Washington State Patrol detectives are seeking witnesses to a hit and run collision that took the life of Messay Asfaw, a 32 year old Ethiopian immigrant. On Friday, October 25, 2013, at approximately 7:00 pm, Asfaw was traveling northbound I-5 near Spokane St. when another vehicle struck Asfaw's teal, 1997 Toyota Corolla. The impact caused Asfaw's car to veer across the lanes of the freeway and hit a cement jersey barrier. Asfaw died of injuries from the collision.Asfaw's teal, 1997 Toyota Corolla

WSP detectives believe that a brown or copper colored semi-truck may have struck Asfaw's vehicle prior to the collision with the jersey barrier. Investigators are requesting assistance in identifying the semi-truck that may have been involved in the collision.

Asfaw graduated from Addis Ababa University with a degree in Business Administration and Information Technology. He came to the United States in 2008, working for the Fairmont Olympic Hotel while attending North Seattle Community College (NSCC.)

He continued to financially support his elderly mother who lives in the countryside of Ethiopia. Asfaw was hoping to continue his education after NSCC and earn a degree in information technology.
