World Bulletin/News Desk
The 24th ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) will be held next week in the northwestern Ethiopian city of Bahir Dar – the first such meeting to be held outside Addis Ababa, a diplomatic source said.
The meeting would be held from January 22 to 24 in Bahir Dar, situated on the southern shore of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, the source told Anadolu Agency. However, he stopped short for stating the reason for the move.
The source also ruled out Egypt's participation in the meeting due to an earlier resolution by the AU Peace and Security Council to suspend the country's membership following the army's removal of elected President Mohamed Morsi in August.
The session will focus on the conflicts in the continent – in South Sudan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic, Sudan and Mali, the source said.
The session's agenda also tackles an African request to acquire a permanent seat in the UN Security Council and issues related to peacekeeping missions in Mali, DRC and Central African Republic, he added.
