Col Karegeya Found Dead In South Africa Hotel

Former Rwanda External Security Organization boss, Col Patrick
Karegeya has been found dead in a hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A source sent this Corp a message on Thursday morning that Karegeya
could have possibly been murdered by unknown elements.


"The suspected murder occurred this morning at Michelangelo Towers, an
upmarket hotel in the Johannesburg suburb of Sandton," the message
read in part.


Karegeya, who was a senior member of Rwanda National Congress (RNC),
had earlier been accused by Kigali of colluding with elements in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other opposition members in the
Diaspora to overthrow President Paul Kagame's regime.


RNC coordinator, Theogene Rudasingwa, said in a statement seen by
Chimpreports that their founding member was killed.


"The Rwandan opposition is deeply saddened to announce the
assassination of Colonel Patrick Karegeya today in Johannesburg, South
Africa. His body was found in a Hotel where he went for a meeting. The
South African authorities are investigating the murder," the statement
reads in part.


Karegeya's death has sparked off mixed reactions from Rwandans, with
many saying he lived by the sword which he died.

Rudasingwa said he was being targeted by Kigali.


Rwanda government is yet to issue a statement on the matter but has
always denied involvement in such incidences.


However, an attempted assassination on Rwanda fugitive General Kayumba
Nyamwasa on June 18, 2010 worsened the relations between Rwanda and
Pretoria.


Wrangles


It is important to note that there have been reports of infighting
within the RNC especially regarding the strategy on overthrowing
President Kagame.


Some party members had proposed a fully-fledged war on Kigali by
forming an alliance of militias in the DRC yet some Tutsi officials
were hesitant to embrace the idea due to the FDLR's genocide ideology.


Rudasingwa said Karegeya was a "courageous soldier who died on the battlefield."


It added: "We are determined more than ever before to carry the torch
of struggling for freedom, for which he died. We shall win. We extend
our condolences to Mrs. Leah Karegeya and the children, and pray that
they find strength in these difficult times."
