The Ugandan government has allowed the family of fallen former Rwanda intelligence chief, Col Patrick Karegeya, to return his body for burial at their home in Rwenjeru Biharwe Sub-county, Kashari County in Mbarara District in the west of the country.

Karegeya was for a long time very close to Mr Kagame and served as head of Rwanda's external intelligence for about a decade.

He was found dead and believed strangled in a plush Johannesburg hotel.

The former spy chief died aged 53, grew up in southwestern Uganda and studied law at Makerere University.

He initially served in Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Army (NRA), before joining the ranks of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, then a rebel group led by Paul Kagame and now Kigali's ruling party with Mr Kagame the country's president.

Earlier on Thursday, Rwanda National Congress (RNC), a party to which Karegeya was a member, said in a statement that he was assassinated by agents of President Paul Kagame's government.

However, Rwanda has vehemently denied involvement in the attacks.
