MBALE - The house and compound where President Yoweri Museveni narrowly survived death in Malukhu, Mbale district in the early 1970s is to be turned into a historical site by the district local government.

The district LC5 chairperson, Bernard Mujasi revealed this in an interview with the New Visionrecently.

Mujasi said the house, No. 49 in Malukhu Housing Estate where Museveni survived being killed by soldiers during former president Idi Amin's regime as he engaged in his liberation struggle, belonged to Mawumbe Mukhwana who was the FRONASA chairperson.

Museveni and others were holding a meeting in that house when they were surrounded by soldiers who killed some of the participants and Museveni with a few others managed to escape.

Malukhu Housing Estate in Mbale industrial division was mainly accommodating civil servants at the time.

"We are going to establish a historical site and also mould the President's giant statue to be erected at the place so that tourists who come to Mbale to visit mount Elgon can also visit the area, which will boost the district income," Mujasi said.

"This site will also work as a historical educational centre for school children and those who have completed school but want to know how Uganda leadership has been changing for the last 50 years," Mujasi said.
