MEA denies Uganda letter to Kejriwal
India Blooms News ServiceNew Delhi, Jan 21 (IBNS) The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday denied the Ugandan High Commission sending a letter to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Admi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal admitting its nationals were being forced into prostitution.
"The letter shown was sent in June last year and it was about case of an individual," External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.
"It is sad that the AAP is playing with a country's reputation and relationship with another friendly country. I can't think of anything greater in terms of betrayal of this country in what is being done," said Khurshid.
Justifying the controversial midnight raid by Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti on African nationals, Kejriwal on Monday said a woman from the Ugandan High Commission praised Bharti's effort and also brought a letter citing a scenario of sex racket.
"A woman from the Ugandan High Commission came to meet Somnath Bharti last evening and told him 'you did very well, many women from our country are being trafficked'. She also brought a letter," Kejriwal said waving the letter at his sit-in protest here demanding action against Delhi Police officers for not cooperating with his ministers.
Bharti on Jan 15 night ordered a raid at a building in Khirki Extension in south Delhi.
Bharti has been also accused of illegally detaining Ugandan women and forcing medical exams on them.
The letter, signed by the Defence Advisor of the Ugandan High Commission, is the reported account of a woman who was duped into coming to India on May 30, by alleged sex traffickers in Delhi and Ugandan capital Kampala.
"The above mentioned lady (name hidden) was duped into accepting to come to New Delhi-India by a well coordinated racket of sex traffickers based in Kampala and Delhi," the letter said.
"The girl had hoped to be offered a job as she was promised by the coordinator, only to be introduced into sex working which she objected and later sought refugee in the Uganda High Commission," said the letter.
"The purpose of this communication is to draw your attention and possibly interrogate the lady." the letter said which according to the AAP justifies Bharti's raid.
However, the Centre has questioned the credibility of the letter.
"Uganda's High Commission. Staff currently not in New Delhi. Please do not give credence to rumours," foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.
