Uganda Wants Karegeya Buried In Rwanda or South Africa

Government has distanced itself from reports that it gave a green light to the burial of murdered former Rwanda spymaster, Col Patrick Karegeya, in Uganda.

State Minister for Regional Cooperation, Henry Okello Oryem was on Saturday quoted by a local newspaper, saying because of Karegeya's unique status, his family will be allowed to bury him in Uganda but "without involvement of government in the arrangements" and after Uganda consults with the Rwandan government.

"We are doing it specifically on humanitarian grounds and not because of his previous connections with government (National Resistance Movement) or anything like that," Mr Oryem reportedly said.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday issued a statement, saying Karegeya was not a Ugandan.

"Following media reports of the death of Col. Patrick Karegeya in South Africa and speculation regarding his internament, the Government of the Republic of Uganda wishes to clarify that the deceased was a citizen of the Republic of Rwanda and resident in South Africa at the time of his death," reads the statement seen by Chimpreports.

"Therefore burial arrangements should be made in one of those countries. The Government of Uganda has communicated this position to the family of the Late Karegeya."

The founding member of the opposition Rwanda National Congress (RNC) was found dead in the Johannesburg's luxurious Michelangelo Towers Hotel on New Year's Day.

Police suspect he was strangled by assassins.

Impeccable sources said the family of Karegeya is expected to issue a statement today on burial arrangements, but quickly added that it was likely that he would be laid to rest in South Africa.

"Government of Uganda is likely to facilitate Karegeya's close relatives to secure visas to travel to South Africa for the burial ceremony," said a source.

Karegeya's family had requested that Karegeya be buried in Biharwe, Mbarara where his mother lives.

 

Karegeya, who was wanted by Rwanda for subversion and treason, was born in Ntungamo before his family relocated to Mbarara.
