{UAH} Lukwago to Museveni: Let’s Meet in Hell
Kampala Lord Mayor, Salongo Erias Lukwago, has hit back at President Yoweri Museveni's recent comments where he reportedly condemned city protestors to 'go to hell'.
Museveni was on Monday quoted in a daily as saying: "You want to demonstrate? No problem; go to free space but after that go home because we have other things to do. Someone says 'no, I wish to go to the market and step on women selling their tomatoes in the market'. We, in Uganda, say go to hell. This man (Uganda's Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura) has enough tear gas once they take enough smoke they go home."
This was during his presentation at a two day regional police commanders' conference at Paraa Safari Lodge in Amuru district.
In his Wednesday counter-offensive, the Lord Mayor pointed out that judging from the current NRM government failures, social political and economic through the 28 years it has been in power, president Museveni was equally deserving of the same 'hell' condemnation.
"When you look at how people's human rights are being violated, how arms of government are all under the control of one man, and the complete lack of the rule of law, you cannot even begin to compare it with the spirit of the old 10 point programme," Lukwago noted.
He went on, "So if you, Mr President are the one condemning us to go to hell, my only comment would be, let's meet in hell."
He made the remarks at the launch of a fresh report on multiparty politics in the country by Uganda Human rights Network at Hotel Africana.
The embattled Lord Mayor, who the previous day had been under confinement by police at his home, arrived at the conference amidst tight security.
He said in his submission that the currently government had greatly diverted from its original motives and that there was no chance of getting it back on the rail.
"What took president Museveni and his group to the bush was to restore the rule of law. He is doing the exact opposite today. ….You were all here when court ruled that I was still the lord mayor of this city; but let me step a foot at my office today and see what happens here," he added.
