Germany: Chancellor Angela Merkelfractured her pelvis in a cross-country skiing accident, forcing her to cancel meetings for the next three weeks. The fall occurred over the Christmas holidays when Merkel was on vacation with her family in Switzerland.
Merkel had planned to travel to Poland this week, and to meet the new prime minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, in Berlin. The chancellor will, however, lead a cabinetmeeting on Wednesday, which will be the first convening of her new coalition of conservatives and center-left Social democrats.
The injury was first thought to be bruising, but doctors discovered it to be a partial fracture of the left interior pelvic ring. "We do not believe she was going very fast," government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters.
