A total of 96 out of 156 officials working in Moroto District local government have no pit-latrines in their homes.
According to a two-page list of the names produced by the office of the Moroto District health director, officials who do not have pit-latrines include some district and municipal education officials, district and municipal councillors.
Dr Michael Omeke Ebele, the district health director, confirmed the development, saying most of the leaders answer the call of nature along the river in the municipality. He said lack of pit-latrines at leaders' homes makes it hard for the district to improve the pit-latrine coverage currently at 13 per cent.
Dr Ebele said with the low pit-latrine coverage, the fight against hepatitis E and cholera becomes difficult because of open defecation.
