Rwandan President Maj Gen Paul Kagame has stressed that he will step down at the end of his constitutional second term that runs up to 2017.
In his latest statement on the topic, Kagame said he would investment in education when time finally runs out on his constitutional stance in power.
Addressing the Nation Media Governors Summit in Nairobi over the weekend, Kagame pointed out that he did not dream of becoming a President in the past, but circumstances forced him to take the highest office in the tiniest landlocked African country.
“I had other plans that did not materialize,� our pries quoted Kagame as stressing. On the contrary, Kagame said survival instincts other than Presidential ambitions saw him join the rebellion.
Despite Kagame’s repeated avowals to leave power, his critics have always doubted the lanky President, borrowing from his counterparts who have undertaken to do so only to go back on their word.
Even during the war that finally dislodged Pierre Habyarimana, Kagame noted many thought he would be the automatic President, yet it had never crossed his mind.
Kagame caused laughter when he revealed that trying to make sense of why he was in State House had always been his major preoccupation since he never made an application to get there in the first place.
Though he pointed out that development and democracy are bedfellows, he was of the view that the latter should take time to wake up in order to give the former time to blossom.
He disclosed that Rwanda is developing very fast because it’s people fear returning to the ugly past of wars, poverty, disease and such evils.
