Museveni Fourth Term Motion mover Youth MP Anite says the President was Left with No Choice but to be Sole NRM Presidential Aspirant as His Nomination  was an Ambush

By Stanley Ndawula

Youth MP Evelyn Anite who led the campaign that finally endorsed President Museveni as NRM sole candidate in 2016 tells Investigator Editorial Editor Stanley Ndawula in a telephone interview how retreating MPs did not give their party chairman a chance to say a word about the move, why she thinks he is best for the top job and talks about the sticky Mbabazi issue in the succession puzzle.

TI: What exactly did you see in the NRM Chairman that compelled you to clear him for another run for the party presidency?

EA: Mzee has all the qualities of a leader but a few will suffice here.  His leadership has been unsurpassed. His reign has been characterized by good leadership and stability. He has returned peace in Northern Uganda, improved the economy and also the infrastructure. With him at the helm, Uganda’s image has improved in the international eye from a bogus republic to a promising State.

TI: But people feel he has had enough and should leave the stage for others?

EA: Leadership is not about ruling in turns. It’s about delivering peace and development. Once a leader is doing this, there is no point giving any other untested and unproven Tom, Dick and Harry a go at the sensitive job. Countries like China which have had uninterrupted Presidency are compelling reasons to give one capable leader a chance to finish his developmental programs.

TI: What more does the President want to do that he has not done already?

EA: The President has good ideas of transforming Uganda from a peasantry country to modernity and who would not want that to happen. Who doesn’t want Uganda to take off from where it is and who doubts that Mzee has done a lot towards that goal?

TI: How did Museveni initially respond when you told him you wanted him to contest as NRM sole candidate in 2016?

EA: We did not give Mzee a chance to say whether he wanted to be the NRM sole Presidential candidate or not! I simply moved the motion and members present started lining up to append their signatures on the motion document. It happened just like that. Mzee had no chance to accept or refuse!

TI: There is belief that you actually seconded Museveni in order to fail Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi’s presidential candidature?

EA: It’s true to an extent but not Mbabazi alone. We have heard rumors for a longtime that many NRM leaders were clandestinely plotting to stand against the party chairman. This is what Mzee meant when he talked about cliques forming within the party.

He also addressed himself to the issue of intrigue. So we had to move fast and endorse the best candidate to ensure cohesion in the party. Good enough, Mbabazi assured us he had never harbored ambitions of standing against the party chairman. He also helped matters when he finally appended his signature on the motion seconding Mzee as our sole Presidential flag bearer.
