PHOTO | SULIMAN MBATIAHA woman whose husband was sentenced to a three-year non-custodial sentence for battering her has declared that their 46-year marriage is over.

Speaking at her father’s home, Ms Esther Muthoni said although she had persevered many beatings from husband Cyrus Kanyi, the assault that led to his prosecution was the last one.

She said she would never allow the retired teacher to humiliate her again.

“I escaped death and it would be foolish to go back and be killed. Even God would see me as a very stupid person by exposing myself to death again after He saved me,” she said.

CHANGED MAN

But her stance is the opposite of that of the man. Speaking separately, Kanyi said he was ready to go to any length to save his marriage.

He said he had already met marriage counsellors from St Martin Group – a Catholic sponsored organisation saying “they were very friendly and ready to help.”

Kanyi was convicted after admitting that he assaulted his wife on January 15 at Ngai Ndeithia village in Nyandarua North district.

Neighbours who responded to her screams found her unconscious. But the soft-spoken Kanyi said he has been a peaceful person throughout his life and “nobody can accuse him of stealing or beating anybody throughout his life.”

Ms Muthoni is now living at her father’s farm with her youngest son.

Kanyi was Muthoni’s teacher in primary. He impregnated and later married her.
