{UAH} Nyombi Speech Saga: Lawyers Throw Weight Behind Karamagi -

By Nixon Segawa

A group of senior members in Uganda’s legal fraternity have showed solidarity with their jailed counterpart, Andrew Karamagi, who is detained for tearing a paper containing Attorney General, Peter Nyombi’s speech at a function last week.

Chimpreports understands that lawyers and activists have been frequenting the Central Police Station in Kampala where Karamagi has been detained since Friday.

Activists praised Karamagi as a courageous man whose actions that seemed to question the legitimacy of Nyombi should be fully backed by the Uganda Law Society.

Godber Tumushabe, the former executive Director at ACODE and a reputable civil activist visited Karamagi during the weekend.

He said the detainee, “unlike the "mpenkoni" and "you want another rap" generation of the youth, Andrew wants much more than patronage. Here is a young man, intelligent and full of courage and he just doesn't want a good life for himself, he wants opportunity for each one youth of his generation.”

He added: “In this young lawyer, you see a Nelson Mandela in the making: ‘I have fought what domination and I have fought black domination. It’s an ideal that i live for and if need be, it’s an ideal I am ready to die for.’”

“Speaking to Andrew with all the courage both on his face and in his voice, and interacting with two smartly dressed Uganda Police officers who looked like his reluctant holders in this powerful but nearly abandoned security installation, I could not hold the feeling that the right person who should be behind bars is the person who is seated in the Attorney General's Chambers.”

Quoting sources, Tumushabe said a plan was being hatched in the DPP's office “to produce Karamagi in court on Monday, do everything possible to deny him bail so he is remanded in Luzira for the next two weeks.”

The Attorney General was giving a speech at High Court during the celebrations to usher lawyers into a New Law Year (2014-2015) when Karamagi swiftly moved from his seat heading for the platform.

Before anyone could realise what was happening, Karamagi had already reached the Attorney General, grabbed a paper carrying Nyombi's speech before tearing it to pieces.

Police have since exhibited intentions to charge Karamagi with assault.

Karamagi studied Law at Uganda Christian University, graduating in 2012.
