Pagan Amum Axed From SPLM too
The ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement party (SPLM) has added former Secretary-General Pagan Amum to his three prominent colleagues who were kicked out of the party for “subversive activities”.
The chairman of the party, Salvatore Kiir, also president of South Sudan, issued a presidential decree dismissing Machar, Taban Deng and Alfred Lado Gore all facing treason related charges before adding Amum to the number.
They will not subscribe to the SPLM Political Bureau, National Liberation Council and party membership henceforth.
Amum is at the moment still detained at state security headquarters and together with his four colleagues, faces treason charges ever since President Kiir slammed coup attempt accusations against him.
Who is Pagan Amum?
Pagan Amum Okiech is the current Secretary General of South Sudan's ruling political party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), a position to which he was elected by the National Liberation Council.
He is also South Sudan's Chief Negotiator with Sudan on post independence issues.
He is the highest-ranking member of the Shilluk ethnic group in the Government of South Sudan.
He served as the Minister for Peace and CPA Implementation in the Government of Southern Sudan, prior to independence in 2011 and as the caretaker Minister of Peace in the first government post independence, taking office on 23 July 2011.
Amum was born in a small post known as Wat in row Luo Nuer area on 3 January 1959.
His father was a non-commissioned post officer responsible for the Wat post.
His family moved to Malakal after his grandfather, chief of the Ubuar people, died and Amum's father was asked to take over the role.
His father went from being a clan chief to later being paramount chief and president of the court.
Amum's father was also a farmer who used modernized farm methods that greatly oppressed Amum who realised that South Sudan had great agricultural potential.
Amum went to school south of Malakal before moving to Kodok to a boarding junior secondary school.
He later studied at Kosi Secondary School which was, at the time, a top 10 secondary school in Sudan.
While there, he had a disagreement with students belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood about the oppression of the South Sudanese peoples and was expelled as a result.
He transferred to Port Sudan Secondary School where he sat the Sudan School Certificate and met Nashalal Nashaluk, his lifelong friend and comrade-in-arms.
Amum studied at the University of Khartoum for three years before rebelling against the system and going to the bush in 1982 prior to the start of the rebellion in Bor, Mashalal, Ayot and other locations.
Amum and others in the bush were brought together by the late John Garang to form the SPLM in 1983.
Amum was the first member of the Military Political High Command for SPLA before falling in battle.
While there, he founded a student organisation known as the Liberation Front in 1978-79.
On July 23, 2013, South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit issued a Presidential Decree suspending Amum and forming a committee led by James Wani Igga, to investigate Amum for alleged misconduct.
Amum was accused of mismanagement of the party, financial irregularities and insubordination, including opposing Kiir's decision to suspend former Finance Minister Kosti Manibe and former Cabinet Minister Deng Alor on corruption charges.
After the alleged December 15, 2013 attempted coup, Amum was arrested and detained at state security headquarters at Jebel along with other 10 former cabinet ministers.
He is still in jail awaiting to answer treason charges in courts of law.
