(Business in Cameroon) - Sources at public electricity provider, AES Sonel, have revealed that a Cameroonian delegation comprising senior officials from the Ministries of Energy and Finance and Economy is currently in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
Led by the Secretary General of the Cameroonian Ministry of Energy and Water, the delegation is visiting Uganda to get an up-close look at how the British investment firm, Actis, operates in the electricity sector. Actis, which will soon takeover 100% of AES in Cameroon’s electricity sector, manages the Ugandan electricity company, UMEME.
This is why the Cameroonian delegation, during its stay, will visit UMEME’s plants and speak with the company’s heads as well as the Ugandan authorities “to discuss the experience gained in this country and identify electricity distribution best practices.”
In December 2013, the Cameroonian government officially gave the go-ahead for the AES-Actis deal involving the 100% transfer of AES’ electricity holdings in Cameroon to Actis. An official AES Sonel source has stated that “all stakeholders expect approval from the lender to close the deal. This should all be done by late February.”
