{UAH} Uganda Reaches Goal, Will Send Team to Denver
Uganda Reaches Goal, Will Send Team to DenverDream on. Thanks largely to the American lacrosse community's support of its ongoing Dream 2014 campaign, Fields of Growth International has surpassed the minimum fundraising threshold that will allow it to send the first African team to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship. The deadline was Saturday. "The dynamic story of Team Uganda was built by the American lacrosse community, high school and college athletes alike. This is a really special relationship and a testament to the growth of the sport," associate director Aimee Dixon said. "In three years, Fields of Growth has traveled an approximate 94 student-athletes to Uganda. These athletes have built a national governing body, introduced over 300 men and women to the sport in Uganda and now join us in making history this summer." Dixon credited Johns Hopkins sophomore midfielder Josie George and Georgetown junior defender Betsy Holland — both of whom traveled to Uganda last summer — for their effort as volunteers for the Dream 2014 campaign. "No one is more deserving [of credit] than these two outstanding and young agents of change," Dixon said. With funding in place, Uganda now will focus on finalizing its roster for the 2014 FIL World Championship, which US Lacrosse will host July 10-19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. Dixon said that announcement could come as soon as Sunday. In November, the Uganda Lacrosse Union named Andrew Boston, a former Delaware player who spent two years in northeastern Uganda with the Peace Corps, as its head coach. Tom Schreiber, a senior midfielder and Tewaaraton Award candidate for Princeton, Virginia sophomore defenseman Tanner Scales and recent high school graduate Casey Lavallee round out what figures to be the youngest coaching staff in FIL history. Tyler Steinhardt, the 20-year-old former Boys' Latin (Md.) player who has raised $231,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project in two years through his Shootout for Soldiers event, is the general manager. |
