Why the Grand Mullah lost seat
LAWYER Ahmednasir Abdullahi fell to collective hatred of enemies gathered over the years and intense scheming by opponents who threw their weight behind Prof Tom Ojienda.
In Thursday's LSK polls, Ahmednasir was the only candidate who failed to recapture his seat. All former council officials led by chairman Eric Mutua won back their seats. Ahmednasir's controversial past heavily weighed down on him. It did not help that during his campaigns he dismissed his competitors as either "projects" or "perennial jobseekers".
Judicial officers worried about his possible return ganged against his candidacy as did potential judicial officers who do not like his abrasive style. "He used derogatory language against his opponents.
He unnecessarily demeaned, humiliated and embarrassed senior judges during the vetting process. I remember him calling a presidential candidate a perennial loser and many other demeaning names. "He called Moi University law graduates half-baked lawyers.
He termed his competitors for (the) JSC slot 'perennial jobseekers who apply for all constitutional jobs'. He termed upcountry votes 'paper weight'. What arrogance. He was his worst enemy," said lawyer Donald Rabala, who lost the council bid.
Another lawyer termed Ahmednasir defeat the "highlight of the LSK elections". He wrote on Facebook: "To me, it's not so much that the good Prof won. I'll live to savour the sweet tumbling down of Mullah. Poetic justice indeed."
Lawyer Boniface Njiru said he had "recovered" his respect for lawyers for showing Ahmednasir the door: "He was so filled with conceit and self aggrandisement that he could not see where he was stepping to."
Prof Makau Mutua, who has been duelling with Ahmednasir on Twitter over a number of issues, termed his loss "a good riddance". Earlier this year and in the height of LSK campaigns, Ahmednasir exchanged bitter words with Mutua accusing him of "human-worshiping" former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. During the two LSK debates aired on TV, Ahmednasir described his opponents as spineless and ex-politicians who should not be allowed to "adulterate" the reform.
He claimed judicial reforms are his forte and that his competitors would "gallop in darkness" if elected. Ahmednasir conceded defeat on Thursday evening before all results came back.
