{UAH} BETTY BIGOMBE, MIRRIAM OBOTE AND THE BIBLE!
Mr Abbey Semuwemba;
-- A week or so before you introduced Betty Bigombe to this forum, i pointed out to G. Nokrach, that there are certain politicians like Odonga Otto, Okello Oryem, and Betty Bigombe who played crucial roles in bringing peace back to northern Uganda. A month prior to that, i attended a sermon in which, Abraham allowed his wife Sarah to go out with the Pharaoh of Eqypt to save his skin (Gen 12.10). To this, God punished the Egyptians with plagues etc forcing the Pharaoh to hand back Abraham's wife and sending them out of Egypt. Cases where women have been caught in between warring factions is countless and this brings me to the question of the role of women in politics and war.
From time, women have played a crucial role in softening the hearts of men against his enemies. Mirriam Obote herself stood between the Baganda and Obote, this is not to suggest that Buganda was an enemy of Obote, much as Obote was to the Baganda. It was on Mirriam Obote's shoulder that this pain from the fall out, lay. The relation between Betty Bigombe and Museveni might have been slightly different from that of biblical Sarah Abraham and Mirriam Obote but nevertheless, the pain inflicted on her people by her leader and party, must have fallen on her her shoulder. The differences, however, lies in the relationship between the woman and the perpetrator. It's true that men always have a thing about topping up humiliation of an enemy by taking a woman from the defeated. For instance, it was well known that Tinyefunze had an Acholi concubine as a prize of his conquest, as so must have been the case with the rest of the NRA commanders.
Betty's relationship with Museveni, was different from that of Sarah and the pharaoh. Whereas we know that Sarah was Abraham's wife, Betty Bigombe was not Museveni's wife but as a supporter, she was a member of the NRA a party she represents to this day. A party that is solely responsible for the policy of impunity towards people from the north, where Betty Bigombe also hails. It's on the basis of this relationship and the subsequent policy and action that i find Betty Bigombe quilty of supporting a party with nefarious policy towards her people, a policy she did not condemn openly and a party she did not walk away from.
Mr Semuwemba's it's for the above reason why i would want an explanation from Betty Bigombe. What made her support a leader and party with a policy of impunity; what made her support a policy of placing thousands of people in camps; what made her support a policy of extrajudicial killing of her people?. If Betty Bigombe still sees it fit and worthy being a member of the same party and she believes the party has brought democracy and freedom of speech, then i will expect her to give me an answer as to why she supported it then and now.
I would therefore kindly request you to send her a copy of this email and i hope she will open her heart and give many people like myself, including those from Gulu Municipal who rejected her in the past.
Akim
