DP leader Norbert Mao says both Ssemogerere and Besigye have ‘in-depth knowledge’ of what happened.

The leader of one of Uganda’s main opposition political parties, the Democratic Party (DP) has told The London Evening Post that President Yoweri Museveni had nothing to do with the killing 27 years ago of former Ugandan Minister of Energy, Dr Lutakome Andrew Kayiira who was gunned down while staying with Henry Gombya, then BBC Kampala correspondent.

Approached to take part in remembering 27 years since Dr Kayiira was killed, DP President General Nobert Mao blurted out that his predecessor Dr Paulo Kawanga Ssemogerere and the former leader of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Dr Kizza Besigye have ‘an in-depth knowledge’ of what took place and are yet to come out to speak about the matter.

At the time of the killing, Dr Ssemogerere was Internal Affairs Minister and was originally handed the duty of finding out the culprits. Reminded of what Mr Mao said, Gombya who is currently the Managing Editor of The London Evening Post said it was true that Dr Ssemogerere was in charge and have even offered him (Gombya) a police guard after the incident. But he said that shortly before he left the country for London, he had gone to see Dr Ssemogerere at his home where he told him that the task of investigating Dr Kayiira’s death had been taken away from him by President Museveni and handed over to his then deputy, Dr Kizza Besigye who was at that time Minister of State for Internal Affairs.

The President General reaffirmed to The London Evening Post that his party will not rest until facts on Kayiira are unearthed. “I have personally talked to some DP friendly legislators in the United Kingdom parliament, to pursue this investigation report so that it is officially released as it was when the Scotland Yard investigated it about 27 years ago,” Mao asserted. He attributed Dr Kayiira’s killing it to what he called “political conspiracy by some government officials who participated in the NRA/M bush war”.

Mao however blamed Museveni for shielding and dining with suspected murderers of DP beloved ones which has greatly contributed to the delay of the Scotland Yard report. The DP leader further reiterated that there are still many issues which need to be investigated about Kayiira‘s death and revealed that the people who wrote about the scandal like Francis Bwengye in his book “The Kayiira’s murder” were intimidated because the government intervened and ensured it was never made public.

Finally, Mao cautioned politicians against eliminating fellow politicians because it is not a solution to political issues and pointed out that the only way to solve issues is how one handles them. He then pledged to train youths who will pursue this cause even after his leadership until the unknown is made public. We called Dr Ssemogerere and asked him to comment about Mr Mao’s allegations. He told us that he gave a wide interview regarding Dr Kayiira’s death to the Monitor newspaper in Kampala last year. “I have nothing more to add on what I said then,” he said.
