Economies that are incapable of generating enough jobs for their populations are as dangerous as the threat posed by external aggression, senior army officers have been told.

Mr Dick Kamugasha, the director of the Technology Development Centre, said it is crucial senior army officers understand how economic affairs can be a source of insecurity.

"Economy is part and parcel of security. And this is why senior military officers who are in position of leadership appreciate that," Mr Kamugasha told the Daily Monitor in an interview.

He was speaking on the sidelines after a tour of the Uganda Industrial Research Institute by senior regional army officers currently undergoing a course at Kimaka Senior Staff College in Jinja.

He continued: "Security of our borders is just as important as establishment and protection of industries. For a thriving economy, there must be industries that create jobs. And this is why the senior army officers undergoing training at Kimaka come here every year to understand the correlations between security and economy."
The coordinator of the Kimaka Senior Staff College, Maj Jeff Mukasa, said field visits are integrated in the training of army officers so as to make them aware that security goes beyond protecting borders.

"This kind of field exercise also allows us to understand which kind of industry contributes most to the economy and it also generally give us an idea of how an economy is run," Maj Mukasa said.
