Namayingo Resident District Commissioner Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka has ordered that parents of jigger-infested pupils should be arrested for negligence.

Touring government primary schools in Namayingo town council and Buswale sub-county recently, Hashaka appeared shocked that most pupils had jiggers in their feet, hands and backs. Hashaka said he would tour all Namayingo sub-counties largely to establish the extent of the problem.

“Having jiggers is neither a curse nor witchcraft as most of our people here believe. It is a sign of poor hygiene and negligence,” Hashaka said in Namayingo town recently. Jiggers, he added, were responsible for Namayingo’s poor academic performance especially in primary leaving examinations.

Pupils with jiggers are often scratching their feet, barely concentrating in class; others either fail to go to school, or arrive late, because of swollen feet. At Bulamba primary school in Namayingo town council, 346 pupils out of 439 pupils had jiggers.

The district inspector of schools, Thomas Maloba, said many parents believed that having jiggers was a sign of richness; others believe jiggers come from anthills around their schools.
